Bishop Carroll Student One of Only 40 Students Nationwide to Participate in National Geography Bee

Bishop Carroll Catholic High School is proud to announce that junior Liam Statler has advanced to the finals of the National Geography Bee at Harvard Square in Boston in May.  Liam is one of just 40 students across the nation to advance to the championship.  These finalists represent .6% of all competitors.

The National Geography Bee is a rigorous competition for high school students that challenges students to apply their geographic knowledge in meaningful and interdisciplinary ways.  Rather than focusing solely on map memorization, the competition highlights the connections between geography and other social sciences, as well as its influence on culture, sports, technology, business, and the arts.

Liam said, “It is an honor that I get to compete at the national level.  The competition process and test were very difficult. When I was younger, I was always very interested in geography and history, and I haven’t lost interest.  Mr. Grosser’s geography and civics class here at Bishop Carroll freshman year added to the knowledge and interest that I have.”

Bishop Carroll social studies teacher and Geography Bee coordinator Mrs. Gabrielle Page commented, “We are incredibly proud of Liam.  He has shown such a strong depth of geographic knowledge throughout each stage of the competition, along with a genuine passion for the subject.  We are excited to cheer him on as he takes the stage at Harvard this May and competes for the national title!”

Bishop Carroll principal Mr. Jonathan Nagy echoed Mrs. Page’s sentiments, saying, “Liam is an outstanding, well-rounded student.  This is an accomplishment that very few students across the country ever get to experience.  We are so proud of him and wish him luck in the national competition.”

His senior year at Bishop Carroll begins in the fall.  After graduation in May 2027, he plans on attending Pitt or Duquesne for exercise physiology and eventually earn a doctoral degree in physical therapy.
