The Generosity of Bishop Carroll Students

Bishop Carroll students are extremely generous in their time, talent, and treasure. In recent months, they have found several worthy causes to create fund drives and raise awareness for others. Here are a few examples.

RICE BOWLS FOR CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES

The entire student body and staff took part in a collection for the Rice Bowl campaign for Catholic Relief Services. Each individual was asked to donate $4, or $.10 per day of Lent, toward the effort. All together, nearly $700 was collected for this worthy cause. Donations to CRS Rice Bowl helps provide lifesaving support to more than 200 million people in more than 120 countries. Additionally, 25% of every donation stays in the local community to fight hunger and poverty, while 75% supports Catholic Relief Services programming around the world.

SUPPORT FOR FIRE DEPARTMENTS

On April 24, Bishop Carroll had a scary event when a fire broke out on the backside of the school. We are blessed and thankful that our maintenance crew jumped into action until the local first responders could arrive.

In gratitude for their support, the Bishop Carroll community raised $900 to be split evenly between the volunteer fire companies of Dauntless (Ebensburg), Cambria Township (Colver), Revloc, and Nanty Glo. They responded quickly and in great numbers, for which we are eternally grateful. Thank you for your hard work in supporting and protecting our school!

COLLECTING FOR THE LOCAL NEEDY

During Holy Week, several juniors and seniors participated in the 30 Hour Food Fast to raise awareness for those who suffer from hunger, especially in our local communities. The students began their fast on Wednesday at 6 AM and concluded at noon on Thursday with a breakfast smorgasbord. During the Fast, students participated in prayer services, talks, recreational time, movies, and more. They were led by Ms. Smith. All funds raised, which totaled over $750, were donated to the Good Samaritan Food Pantry in Northern Cambria. The Food Pantry is housed at Father Andriy’s Parish, Saint Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church.

SUPPORTING DRUG OVERDOSE AWARENESS

Students in the Bishop Carroll economics class recently partnered with a local nonprofit organization, the Nicholas' Voice Foundation, which focuses on overdose awareness. As part of the class, the students helped raise awareness and over $1,600 to support the organization’s mission. They did so through a variety of projects, including the design, marketing, and sale of BC windbreakers.

In addition to educating the community about the dangers of drug abuse, the nonprofit donates to local first responders and the Gallitzin Little League, helping ensure that all children can play, regardless of financial circumstances. The organization also supports the Healing Patch, a program that helps children cope with the loss of a loved one. Through this initiative, students saw firsthand how economic principles can be used to make a meaningful difference in their community.
