Alumna Honored for Making a Difference in Her Profession and Her Community

Alumna Honored for Making a Difference in Her Profession and Her CommunityKerri Golden, class of ’93, was among nine women honored at the 32nd Annual YMCA Tribute to Women in May. Chairwoman of the event, Valerie Deater, said the honorees demonstrated exceptional values and leadership in both their careers and personal lives.

Golden’s award was in the Professions category. An Associate Professor of occupational therapy at Saint Francis University, her work goes beyond student instruction.

Since 2006, she has led more than 500 occupational therapy students on a trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with senators and representatives to advocate for better healthcare services for different populations of patients.

As you might expect, this is not Golden’s first recognition. In 2014, she received the Academic Educator Award for outstanding mentorship to students, and the President’s Award for legislative acumen from the PA Occupational Therapy Association.

Through work with local schools and non-profits, including Skills of Central PA and Alternative Community Resource Program, she and her students conduct health and wellness promotion activities and promote the field of occupational therapy in the community.

Golden gives back to her community in other ways, too. She is a trained court-appointed special advocate, which allows her to assist families affected by drugs, incarceration, neglect and foster placement. She also serves on the board of directors of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, working to help the organization help individuals and families in need in an eight-county area.

She earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in occupational therapy from Duquense University and a Doctor of Education degree in administration and leadership studies from IUP.

Congratulations, Kerri!, We are proud of your accomplishments and the difference you make in our community!
