Owen’s Odyssey: 2005 Grad Plans Appalachian Trail Hike for Charity

Owen's Odyssey is how Owen Standley ’05 is referring to his upcoming 100-day thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail (2,200 miles) to raise awareness and funds for polio eradication through Rotary International.

“Polio is going to be the second human disease to become eradicated and we can play a role in that history,” Owen said. “For every dollar raised through my project, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will give a 2:1 match, making my efforts all the more worthwhile.”

Owen will begin his journey on March 9, 2021, with the intention of hiking 25 miles each day. He plans to log his journey on social media to share progress, the natural wonders of the Appalachian range, and his skills on the ukulele. Details on how to follow his trip can be found on www.hikeforpolio.org.

Owen is hopeful that this might be a project that alumni and students will follow in real time. One of the simplest ways that people can show their support is by following Owen on social media. He is on Facebook and Instagram under the handle @HikeForPolio.

The more people who follow, the more exposure his trip will receive! Consider following Owen’s journey and cheering on a fellow Husky as he seeks to do good in the world with this charitable project!
