Accelerated Reader update: July 21, 2010 Reading is a critically important skill, and one which Bishop Carroll is committed to developing in all students.
Accelerated Reader
BishopCarrollCatholicHigh School recognizes the importance of reading in our students’ future successes – both in and out of the classroom. Therefore, we continue to require that students complete a supplemental reading requirement in order to graduate. The Accelerated Reader (AR) program is used to assist students and teachers in completing this requirement.
During the summer of 2010, students are required to earn 14 points.Summer reading prepares students for the upcoming school year and gives teachers a common ground with which to begin instruction. Some specifics of this program are listed below:
All BC students must complete 28 AR points this school year.
Of those 28 points, 14 must be completed by Friday, September 17, 2010. Of the remaining points, 7 must be completed by the end of the second marking period, and 7 must be completed by the end of the third marking period.
Students who do not meet the required AR deadlines will be placed on Academic Probation for a minimum of two weeks. For example, students who do not meet the 14 point requirement by Friday, September 17 will be placed on academic probation for a minimum of two weeks.Students may only return to full participation upon completion of the requirement.
In addition, the AR test score average will continue to be included as part of the English grade.
Students may NOT check books out of the BC library over the summer. AR testing takes place every other week throughout the entire summer. Contact the office for information on testing dates and times.
This year we are doing something new, something to make your summer reading more enjoyaboe and more rewarding. for this summer's required reading, the entire student body will select ONE book from a list of 14. You will read that book over the summer.
this summer reading counts towards your AR requirement. in September all students who read that particular book will meet with a faculty member to discuss it. Before the discussion, all students will take an AR test on their book. The book point values range from 5 to 23 points.
The books selected offer a wide variety of subject matter. There is fiction and non-fiction, murder - mystery, romance, science fiction and adventure. There is sure to be something for everyone.
1. Students have already picked a book and know what book they have to read. 2. Students have to read that book by September 13, 2010. 3. Meet as a group to take a quiz on it that counts for AR points. 4. Discuss that book in your group
** While this book will count towards your AR requirements of 14 points due at the beginning of the school year, do not rely solely on this book for your points since you will have to pass the quiz on it and may not get the total point value. **
